It still can't completely make up for the occasional awful luck, but if you're ending up solo at the end of every battle there are probably tricks you could learn to make the battles go much easier. There's a ton of skill involved in flying your ship in battles: dodging missiles, avoiding forward guns of the enemy, strafing effectively, etc.
